Living willow structures - Willow Domes and Tunnels
Saturday 17 Nov 2018
10am-4.30pm
Learn how to plant a green shelter using living willow that will grow for years to come. The live willow rods are planted without roots, but have fully formed root buds which will grow when in contact with moisture/soil. Forming a lattice with the upright willow rods will allow the structure to form "solid" sides as the leaves grow. Learn the techniques by planting a structure at WoWo, and use your knowledge to create your own structure at home! John will be able to advise on purchasing your own willow for use at home
Living Willow Seats
Saturday 9 March 2019
10am-4.30pm
Create a living willow seat for your garden, to your own design. Weave a hood, arms and back support, and have a living herb seat, or oak slab seat. Be sure to have somewhere to plant it though! Finished seats are approx 6’ high x 20” diameter, and you’ll need to be able to get them home!
Willow Garden Structures
Saturday 13th April 2019
10am-4.30pm
Make a Willow Garden Obelisk for Sweet Peas or other climbers. The design can also be amended to make a "cage" to support tall herbaceous plants (eg delphiniums). Techniques learned can also be applied to many other designs. During the course you will also learn to make a "sunflower" plant support

John has been involved with the environment, ecology, woodland management and conservation since 1990. He originally volunteered with various conservation groups and was employed at Bore Place as a Conservation Officer to manage the 40 acres of woodlands and run the Green Wood Workshop. He is a qualified tree surgeon and coppice-worker and makes a range of woodcraft products. He set up his own business in 2000 and now runs courses and offers woodland advice and tree surgery services across Kent, Sussex and into South London. In more recent years, John has become involved with many local schools, designing and building living willow structures including Dinosaur Feet, Space Pods and Starfish, to use both as outside classrooms and shade in the playground.
